Basically poker is a simple card game in which all the players wager according to the strength of the cards they hold. The actual origin of the poker game is not known as some say Chinese played cards in the late 10th century and some believe Egyptians used to play these cards around twelfth or thirteen century. However the current 52 card deck is often credited to European countries as in the fifteenth century the France introduced the current suit of diamonds, clubs, hearts and spades in a game called poque. And there is a possibility that the word poker is derived from that word, however some others believe the word poker is derived from the German card game or the German bluffing game pochen. Britishers are also credited with the introduction of the games such as “brag” and “faro”. But eventually in the late eighteenth century poker migrated to the United States and continued to spread throughout North America.

Poker is a game of five card hands dealt from a 52 card deck of standard playing cards and all poker hands exactly consist of five cards. There are some of the poker games such as seven card stud which gives the player opportunity to play with more than five cards but the final winning result goes to the player with the best five card poker hand. In the game of poker the objective of the player is of course to win the money and he can do it in two ways. Firstly if the player has the best five card hand at the showdown and secondly to persuade all the players to fold. And with the second possibility of winning the player also has option to bluff and a player can even win the game if he has worst cards. For e.g. if everyone believes that you have a strong hand even if you are having a hand worse than others, if you raise the stake the other players may prefer to fold rather than adding more chips to the pot that they would probably lose, and if they all fold you win even having worst cards also.

Poker could be considered as a game of probabilities and luck also as a small element of luck is always needed in gambling to win. Understanding the poker odds and making right decision at the right time would lead you towards winning in the game of poker.
